We always start our school year with a field trip and this year we decided to go to Hodgenville, KY where Abraham Lincoln was born. They don't actually have his original cabin, but they've obtained a couple of cabins that would have been just like the one he was born and raised in.
The first stop was on the Knob Creek property where his parents leased 30 acres while they were in a court dispute over the deed on the 300 hundred acres their family had purchased.
This cabin that they reconstructed on this property actually belonged to a friend of his, Austin Gollaher. He was believed to have saved Abraham's life from drowning in a creek when they were young boys on the Knob Creek property.
Downtown Hodgenville has a statue of Mr. Lincoln.
This monument holds another cabin that they thought belonged to the Lincoln family, but they found out about 40 years ago that it wasn't the same cabin. But it is one like they would have lived in and this monument is built in the exact location where their cabin stood. There are 56 steps representing his 56 years of life.

On our way home we stopped in Harrodsburg to see the Old Fort Harrod State Park.
This temple was constructed to hold the cabin where Abraham Lincoln's mother and father were married!
I thought it was very fitting to end this post with the girls on a HUGE tree!
